FAQs

We get asked a lot of questions, and we can’t always respond quickly, so here are some common questions we get asked!

How do you come up with the scores for Hotels and Resorts?

Trying to come up with a fair, reliable and reusable system for scoring hotels is hard! We’ve gone through three versions but we try not to make too many changes (it would invalidated older scores!). We’ve always stuck to a 100 point score in five categories: Room (30 Points), Property (20 Points), Service (20 Points), Amenities (20 Points) and Value (10 Points).

We have the full current scorecard subcategories posted here.

When did you start Travel at Random?

Travel At Random was a blog we started back in 2013. We kept it up for a while (well, Ryan did all the work!), but we let it go after a few years. In 2024 we decided to bring it back as a vlog (Video Blog). So in April 2024 we created the Travel At Random YouTube channel, mainly as a way to document some of our more interesting travels.

The first year was just small, short videos, but in May 2025 we decided to put more focus on the content. We updated the format and released our first ‘main’ video – a review of the amazing Nayara Tented Camp in La Fortuna, Costa Rica!

We’ve played around with the topics and format a bit in our first year, and have been so grateful for the amount of support from viewers! Thank you to all of our subscribers!

What makes these videos 'Unbiased'

We feel strongly that the only way to get an unbaised opinion is to not accept free travel or stays, and not to advertise ourselves during our trips. We want to experience the travel as anyone else would, so we can share the real story with our viewers!

We will never produce reviews for travel or hotels which have comped or given a discount due to this channel. We will use loyalty programs and perks to offset some costs, but will always be transparent about the prices we pay for these experiences.
