Welcome back! Today we’re starting a brand-new series as we head to a tropical Caribbean destination in Central America. This country is often overlooked, but it offers incredible eco-adventures, lush jungles, and beautiful white sand beaches.
Our journey takes us into the jungle to an amazing off-grid luxury eco-resort for some cave exploration and ancient ruins before we head to a beachside retreat for relaxation. Join us as we explore the seat, service, and experience on this international Delta flight to Belize!
The Ground Experience: DCA & ATL
Our journey began at our home airport, Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C. We hopped on a quick 90-minute flight to Atlanta on an Airbus A320 to catch our international connection.
- Check-in & Security: Our First Class tickets included two free checked bags up to 70 pounds each, which were tagged with yellow Sky Priority tags. We cleared security quickly and headed to the gate.
- Lounge Access: Lounge access for this route is complicated. While not automatically included with all First Class tickets, Delta Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion members flying to Central America are granted access. Between our tickets and status, we were able to utilize the Sky Club.
- The Hub: We arrived at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International (ATL), the busiest airport in the world. After landing at the B-gates, we made our way over to Concourse F for our international departure.
The Aircraft & Seat: Airbus A321-200
Our flight from Atlanta to Belize City (BZE) was a 1,139-mile journey with a flight time of just over three hours.
- Configuration: This aircraft features 20 First Class seats in a 2-2 layout across five rows.
- Seat Specs: We were in seats 3C and 3D. These are the older style Delta First Class seats (not the new A321neo versions), measuring 21 inches wide with 37 inches of pitch.
- Tech & Power: Each seat features a 13.3-inch touchscreen monitor that is bright and responsive. Power is available via a universal outlet and a USB-A port at the seat, plus an additional USB-A port on the IFE screen.
- Storage: Unlike newer models, storage is limited to the seatback pouch and under-seat space. There is a small cocktail table between the center armrests for drinks.
Service & Amenities
While this is an international flight, it is important to note that it does not offer the same “Delta One” amenities found on long-haul routes.
- Amenities: There were no pillows, blankets, or amenity kits provided on this flight. However, Delta does offer free earbuds for those who forget their own.
- Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi was available for SkyMiles members and stayed connected throughout the flight, even while over the Gulf of Mexico.
- Lavatory: The forward lavatory was stocked with Grown Alchemist soap and hand lotion and was kept clean by the crew.
Dining in the Sky
Service began about 40 minutes after takeoff. Due to some light turbulence, our drinks and lunch were served together.
- Pre-Departure: We kicked things off with iced coffees—a travel hack where we ask for hot coffee poured over ice.
- The Meals: Delta allows you to pre-order meals a week in advance through their modernized online system.
- Vegetarian/Vegan Option: Ryan ordered the chickpea dish (similar to Chana Masala) served with spinach and rice. It had a nice amount of heat and was served with a fresh salad and a pre-packaged chocolate cookie bar.
- Southwest Harvest Salad: Trevor opted for the salad, which was light and fresh, though the portion was a bit small. It came with a warm roll and a coffee chocolate cake.
- Drinks: We celebrated the start of vacation with a pair of Gin and Tonics. The crew was great about refills throughout the flight.
The Verdict
We arrived in Belize City and cleared customs quickly using the online QR code system, which we highly recommend filling out before you depart.
Is Delta First Class to Belize worth it? We paid $1290 each for these round-trip tickets (roughly twice the economy fare at the time). Now that does include a few extra add-ons you’d pay for with an economy ticket, like two 70lb checked bags, priority boarding and extra legroom.
If you value the extra space and the baggage allowance, it’s a great upgrade. However, the meal alone probably isn’t worth the price jump.
Next week: The adventure truly begins! We’re heading two hours into the jungle to stay in a thatched-roof cabana perched over a waterfall.
